What Changes Would You Make To Improve Scotdir March 12, 2026 – Posted in: News
Overall, there is much unity in the community at scotdir. When there is temporary dissent, it is usually attributed to new changes and/or changes in earnings. The fact that so many volunteer, and remain volunteers without pay, and that most are willing to ride out the changes with a wait-and-see attitude, indicates how much we all value scotdir. I am coming up on my 4th anniversary here at scotdir in a few days. Most of my experiences have been good, great and awesome. However, there are some things I would like to change to see scotdir improve. The following are not complaints, but sent with my honest observations and a spirit of goodwill. Notifying of new changes Whenever a new change is in the making, especially on how writers will benefit, the wording raises expectations way too much, and when it does not quite work out as introduced, discouragemnt sets in. For example, there has been much said about the recent acquistion to RR Donnelly. Expectations were wonderfully overwhelmingly touted. And yet, I for one, would like to know the “when and how” of matters, not guesswork or speculations from hard-working volunteers. I appreciate the volunteers greatly, and it should not be left up to them to try and appease those who want those particular answers. Straightforward answers need to be clear and concise from those in power. Most writers can deal and adjust to the known, but not the unknown. Contest rules It works against a possible contender if he/she is the only one to respond to a lone title. A lone title earns no points. And I say, “earn” because the writer does not stand a chance of winning, as long as it remains a “lone” title. I would like to see a lone title given an automatic 5 points, and that would encourage someone to compete against it. I once wrote 3 or 4 lone titles and lost out from all points because no one challenged me. To me, this is unfair and can cause a lack of interest. The frog More than all issues, having to let a frog (basically) decide to let me improve my own work, or not, is annoying and frustrating. I would love to have the freedom of being able to correct and improve my own work! When I look back at my humble beginnings at scotdir, I cringe at some of my errors. If scotdir wants and expects to have the highest quality of articles, please let us have access to correct our own work. It is discouraging to wait 7 days and then have no guarantee of success. Blue stars I worked really hard to earn my stars. They were something wonderful to strive for. I looked up to everyone who had them in awe, when I first came to scotdir. They were highly sought after because they meant something. Today, they represent very little and that is discouraging to me. I would like to see them as a rewarded achievement somehow. Not necessarily money, but something to show accomplishment means something to scotdir. Ad revenue It is understandable that ad revenue is going to fluctuate, driven by the economy. A notice from scotdir offering their perspective on matters would put much speculation to rest. In general terms, is business at scotdir picking up, or temporarily stagnating. Share with us the trends you see as a business. Being a partnership, sometimes feels a bit one-sided here. As a partnership, when times are rough, people usually pull or stick together, and rejoice together when times are good again. scotdir is where knowledge rules, and sharing knowledge is encouraging with members, who then feel more like partners when scotdir shares knowledge with its writers. Thank you, scotdir, for giving me an opportunity to express my concerns without fear or criticism.
